{"id":1434,"date":"2018-10-16T00:33:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T00:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/?p=1434"},"modified":"2022-06-21T19:08:47","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T19:08:47","slug":"indigenous-celebration-festival-in-bali","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/2018\/10\/indigenous-celebration-festival-in-bali\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Celebration Festival, in Bali 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago, on May 11-15, the Mentawai Cultural Education Foundation (YPBM) team attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indigenouscelebration.art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous Celebration Festival<\/a> in Ubud, Bali.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/Festival_Cultures_01.jpg\" alt=\"Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai participated in the Indigenous Celebration Festival 2018 in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\nIn this event, YPBM brought a team of members from the Mentawai Pumaijat cultural arts centre, in Saibi Samukop &#8211; Siberut subdistrict, to attend the festival. Of the 6 members from the Pumaijat Studio community, we brought 4 YPBM cultural education students and 2 studio teachers.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/IMG_6384.jpg\" alt=\"Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai students participated in the Indigenous Celebration Festival 2018 in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\nThis event was extraordinary, with a variety of cross-cultural interaction across the Asia-Pacific region proudly displaying their culture and skills at the event.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/Festival_Cultures_02.jpg\" alt=\"Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai students participated in the Indigenous Celebration Festival 2018 in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\nIn this event the YPBM team displayed elements of our culture such as traditional dance performances (turuk laggai), which are very unique and interesting.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/IMG_6386-BM.jpg\" alt=\"Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai students performed traditional ceremonial dance in the Indigenous Celebration Festival 2018 in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\nIn addition, the YPBM team also brought a senior Mentawai traditional tattoo artist (sipatiti) and his young apprentice to host workshop seminars whereby they could explain to the contingents of the Indigenous Celebration Festival the materials and processes for making traditional Mentawai tattoos (titi). The workshop attendees were very interested in the uniqueness of the traditional Mentawai tattoos and many of them requested that the tattoo artists (Sipatiti) perform the tattoo tradition at the event.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/IMG_6516.jpg\" alt=\"Staff and teachers of the Mentawai Cultural Education Foundation host presentations on traditional Mentawai tattoo at an indigenous festival in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/Festival_Titi_01.jpg\" alt=\"Staff and teachers of the Mentawai Cultural Education Foundation host presentations on traditional Mentawai tattoo at an indigenous festival in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\nNot only that, the YPBM team also hosted a cross-cultural workshop, whereby the YPBM chairman introduced and explained about the YPBM cultural education program, our goals, objectives and impacts on the younger generation of Mentawai.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/IMG_6258.jpg\" alt=\"The Chairman of the Mentawai Cultural Education Foundation presented a Mentawai cultural education workshop at the Indigenous festival in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\nThere were many other unique attractions about Mentawai culture displayed at the Indigenous Celebration Festival, Bali.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/Festival_Students_01.jpg\" alt=\"Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai students participated in the Indigenous Celebration Festival 2018 in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"feature_image_wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/wp-content\/themes\/synch\/skins\/sukumentawai\/images\/IndigenousCelebration\/IMG_6400.jpg\" alt=\"Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai students participated in the Indigenous Celebration Festival 2018 in Ubud, Bali\" \/><br \/>\nThe entire Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai (YPBM) family would like to thank our partner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iefprograms.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous Education Foundation (IEF)<\/a> for supporting and taking us to this event.<\/p>\n<p>Our gratitude also goes to Mr. David Metcalf, Immanuella Shinta, Suku Suku Tatau and all others who gave their support.
