There has been an enormous surge in development, tourism, and immigration \u2013 bringing with it powerful foreign influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>August Tonggiat, founder of our grass-root cultural education foundation,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Yayasan Pendidikan Budaya Mentawai<\/a>, identified how these changes are negatively affecting the Mentawai youth and in particular their connection to Indigenous culture and language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"351\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Sukan_school.jpg\" alt=\"Mentawai girl trapped in a school classroom\" class=\"wp-image-1534\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Sukan_school.jpg 540w, http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Sukan_school-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonggiat says,&nbsp;<em>\u201cMost children here do not speak Mentawai language, so when they speak to our elders they speak in a foreign language that our elders don\u2019t understand. This is one example of the negative impact that acculturalisation is having on our community; the young generation are unable to communicate with our own people, our elders \u2013 the custodians of our cultural knowledge and wisdom.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fearful that our Indigenous language is now on the verge of disappearing forever, and aware of the devastating impacts this will have on our culture and the health and wellbeing of their community, Tonggiat and the cultural education team have devised a means to a positive solution. Our plan is to translate from Indonesian and English language, because outside of our own community we have a lot of foreigners that visit from Indonesia and other countries around the world. We want to maintain our language, our culture, and we feel that this is an important step toward doing that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"386\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Santi_YPBM-rsearcher.jpg\" alt=\"Mentawai women conducting research\" class=\"wp-image-1533\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Santi_YPBM-rsearcher.jpg 540w, http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Santi_YPBM-rsearcher-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Identifying a shortage in funding and the design \/ publication resources needed to achieve our objectives, we (YPBM) reached out to the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iefprograms.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Education Foundation (IEF)<\/a>\u00a0for further collaboration. IEF, who have been working to empower our Mentawai team since IEF founder, Rob Henry, arrived in the Islands in 2008, gladly accepted our offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henry says,&nbsp;<em>\u201cThis is such an important and meaningful initiative, as identified by the Mentawai team. We are continually inspired by their determination and growth, and grateful for the opportunity to play a very small part in their visions and achievements. IEF was formed for this purpose, to fill the small gaps in vital Indigenous, cultural-based projects according to the needs and circumstance of each specific group. This has enabled IEF to grow too, through listening, learning and adapting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IEF and YPBM believe that language is the foundation of culture \u2013 without Indigenous languages, many cultural practices lose anchorage, resulting in isolation, and extreme disconnection from identity and self-esteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"374\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Mentawai-Sikerei.jpg\" alt=\"Mentawai tribespeople\" class=\"wp-image-1531\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Mentawai-Sikerei.jpg 540w, http:\/\/www.sukumentawai.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Mentawai-Sikerei-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With additional funding support from\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/au.lush.com\/tag\/charity-pot\" target=\"_blank\">LUSH Charity Pot<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.firebirdfellowships.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Firebird Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nau.travel\/\" target=\"_blank\">NAU travel<\/a>, language research activities are being carried out by the Mentawai foundation team over the coming months.
